Communities that Care
South County Cares
A Communities that Care Coalition
Who is South County Cares?
We are a board of community members whose goal is to improve the Payson, Santaquin, Goshen, and Genola communities through prevention and outreach. We do this by hosting parenting classes, attending events, providing trainings, and working with schools to educate the youth in our communities about the effects of different substances on their minds and bodies. We do these activities all while using the Communities that Care framework created at the University of Washington.

What is Communities that Care (CTC)?
Communities That Care guides communities through a proven five-phase change process. Using prevention science as its base, CTC promotes healthy youth development, improves youth outcomes, and reduces problem behaviors.
Prevention Process
CTC helps communities prevent problems before they develop. Many see dramatic reductions in levels of youth alcohol & tobacco use and crime & violence.
The CTC process begins with a youth survey to identify a community’s risks and strengths. Based on these data, CTC helps communities select and implement tested & effective prevention programs and policies. CTC also helps amplify programs already working.
CTC’s Social Development Strategy is employed throughout, to foster positive youth development.
Opportunities. Skills. Recognition.
The Social Development Strategy fosters the success and health of young people from before birth through every stage of development. It’s easy to use, easy to remember, and it works!
Providing young people with opportunities, skills and recognition strengthens bonding with family, school and community. Strong bonds motivate young people to adopt healthy standards for behavior.
This strategy has been tested and proven effective. It is part of the foundation of CTC.

History of South County Cares
South County Cares was originally started as Payson Area CTC in July 2011. The name then changed to Communities Acting Against Substance Abuse. In January 2024, our name changed again to what we are known as now, South County Cares. Over the years, we have completed the training processes and have implemented several programs. We have implemented the Strengthening Families Program and the Mayor Recognition Awards.
