Help Prevent Sewer Backups | Pretreatment Program
The Wastewater Treatment Plant is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's sewer collection system. This includes all the main sewer lines (approximately 100 miles) generally found in every city street.
Properties are connected to the collection system through a pipe known as a sewer lateral. The sewer lateral runs from the end of the structure to the city main sewer pipe in the street. Property owners are responsible for the maintenance and installation of the sewer lateral from the house or business to the connection into the main sewer line. The main sewer lines collect the sewage and transport it to the Wastewater Treatment Plant located at the north end of town. Once at the plant the sewage is biologically broken down into solids and clean water.
To prevent backups and buildups, routine operation of the jet cleaning equipment is preformed. This operation maintains the system by using high-pressure water along with mechanical cutters to remove roots, rocks, grease and other such buildup. The portable lateral camera also helps identify problem areas and evaluate maintenance operations.
To increase public awareness of how the wastewater treatment plant works, tours are available for scout troops, schools and the public. Please call Sarah at 801-465-5277 to schedule a tour. The Water Environment Federation also offers a way for the public to understand the process. They have created an easy to use and very educational interactive wastewater treatment plant map.
